ALRC’s community is not defined by age, profession, or academic background. It is defined by one shared conviction: that reading, critical thinking, and knowledge access matter – for individuals, for communities, and for Nigeria.
We have members who are secondary school students reading their first novel outside class. We have professionals who use our monthly book reviews to stay intellectually engaged. We have educators who participate to sharpen their own practice. We have parents who join because they want to model a reading culture for their children. We have volunteers who facilitate because giving back through literacy is meaningful work.

What unites every member – regardless of age, background, or reason for joining – is that they leave ALRC different from how they arrived. They read more. They think more carefully. They express themselves with greater confidence. They belong to something that has produced documented, measurable change in 1,200+ lives since 2018. That is what membership in this community means.

Community Reading Circles
Weekly facilitated reading sessions – in person across Asaba and Delta State, and accessible online for members across Nigeria. Each session uses curated texts, structured discussion, and guided reflection to build comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking over time.

Monthly Book Reviews & Discussion Guides
Every month, ALRC curates and reviews a carefully selected title. Members receive full discussion guides, thematic summaries, and community commentary – whether or not they can attend in person.

Priority access to ALRC’s inter-school essay competitions, debate events, author engagements, literacy campaigns, and the annual World Literacy Day Summit – as a participant, audience member, or volunteer facilitator.

MEMBERSHIP TYPES
Find Your Place in the Community
Individual Member
For students, professionals, parents, and any adult who wants to read more deliberately, think more critically, and engage with a community of learners. What you do: Attend reading circles, participate in discussions, access monthly book reviews, and engage with ALRC’s programs and events. Membership is free. Commitment is everything.
Youth Member (Under 18)
For secondary school students who want structured reading support, competition opportunities, and a platform to develop confidence, argumentation, and academic skills outside the classroom. What you do: Participate in school reading clubs, debate and essay competitions, and youth leadership sessions facilitated by ALRC. Free for all students under 18.
Volunteer Member
For individuals who want to contribute their time, skills, and energy to facilitating reading sessions, supporting outreach events, and helping ALRC deliver its programs in schools and communities. What you do: Facilitate reading circles, support book drives, assist at events, and mentor younger participants under ALRC’s structured volunteer framework. No fee. Training and support provided.
Institutional Member
For schools, organizations, and community groups that want to bring ALRC’s structured literacy programming to their students, staff, or community members. What you do: Partner with ALRC to deliver school-based or community-based programs – with dedicated facilitation, outcome tracking, and formal impact reporting. ALRC’s programs are delivered by a community of trained volunteers who believe that their time is one of the most valuable things they can offer a young reader. Volunteering with ALRC is structured, supported, and meaningful – it is not ad hoc event attendance. It is a commitment to showing up consistently for the communities we serve

Who we are looking for
You do not need to be a teacher or an academic. You need to be reliable, consistent, and genuinely invested in the development of young readers. ALRC provides structured training and ongoing support – but the commitment to show up must come from you. We are building a volunteer community of people who take that seriously.

WHERE WE ARE
Asaba. Lagos. Nationwide Online.
ALRC currently operates in-person reading circles and programs in Asaba and Delta State – our founding home, where the work began in 2018 and where our deepest school and community partnerships are rooted.
In 2025, ALRC expanded to Lagos with the inaugural meeting of the Lagos Literacy and Reading Club – bringing the same structured reading culture to Nigeria’s largest city and most diverse intellectual community.
Members outside Delta State and Lagos can participate fully in ALRC’s monthly book reviews, online reading discussions, Telegram reading alerts, and digital community platforms – with in-person chapters expanding as the organization grows.
