About Asaba Literacy and Reading Club (ALRC)
Who We Are
Asaba Literacy and Reading Club (ALRC) is a community-based, nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to strengthening reading culture, critical thinking, and lifelong learning among children, youth, and adults in Nigeria. We operate on a development principle supported by education research and field practice: literacy is not charity- it is infrastructure for human capital development. Through structured reading programs, school-based interventions, debates and writing competitions, mentorship, and community learning hubs, we equip learners with the academic skills, decision-making capacity, and knowledge needed for productive citizenship and long-term socioeconomic participation.
Our work prioritizes communities where limited access to books, learning spaces, and educational support continues to restrict opportunity.
Our Mission
To improve literacy outcomes and cultivate a sustainable reading culture by delivering accessible, structured, and measurable education programs in partnership with schools, communities, and public institutions.
Our Vision
A society where every learner possesses the literacy, critical reasoning, and knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to economic development, civic life, and social stability.
Our Approach
ALRC implements literacy development through evidence-informed programming:
School-Based Literacy Programs:
Reading clubs, debates, essay competitions, and curriculum-aligned enrichment
Community Learning Platforms:
Monthly book reviews, public reading sessions, and literacy campaigns
Access Initiatives:
Book drives, educational resource distribution, and reading hubs (physical and digital)
All programs are designed with clear learning objectives, participant tracking, and outcome evaluation.
Youth Development & Mentorship:
Guidance programs linking literacy to career awareness, ethics, and civic responsibility
Policy & Advocacy Engagement:
Participation in education and literacy policy discussions with public institutions

Our History
Founded: July 2018
Founder: Mr. Maxwell Ajufo
ALRC began in 2018 as Asaba Reading Club, a grassroots initiative created to address declining reading culture and limited access to learning resources among young people in Asaba, Delta State.
The organization was initially registered with the Delta State Ministry of Youth and expanded rapidly through community engagement, school partnerships, and educational programming.
In response to increased scope and institutional collaboration, the organization underwent formal restructuring. In July 2025, it obtained national nonprofit status under Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as:
Asaba Literacy and Reading Club (ALRC)
This transition established ALRC as a nationally recognized literacy organization with formal governance, documented partnerships, and scalable education programs.
